VW Transporter T5, T6 and T6.1 body parts explained
The VW Transporter T5, T6 and T6.1 look closely related, but doors, lights, bumpers and other panels are not automatically interchangeable. A facelift can alter brackets, connectors, openings and contours. Use these checks to avoid ordering a part that looks right but does not fit your van.
Identify the correct generation first
Do not rely solely on the badge. Check the model year, VIN, wheelbase and body specification. The T6.1 is based on the T6, yet the front end and electronic equipment can contain important differences.
A listing title is a useful starting point, but photos, the OE number and detailed specifications are more reliable than a broad label such as “T5/T6”.
Body parts that need extra checking
Headlights, grille, bonnet, wings and front bumper form one styling package. A different lamp shape can affect adjacent panels. For rear lights, compare the connector and lamp layout as well as the physical shape.
For front, sliding and rear doors, check the fitting side, wheelbase, glazing, wiring loom, lock and window mechanism. Confirm which trim, glass, hinges and electrical parts are included.
Assess paint and condition carefully
The same colour name does not guarantee a perfect match. Compare the paint code, while allowing for fading, use and previous repairs. Refinishing may still be needed.
Review every photo for dents, scratches, corrosion, damaged edges and signs of repair. Never assume mouldings, seals, glass or electronics are included unless the listing says so.
The OE number is the strongest check
Match the complete OE number on the existing part with the listing. Suffix letters or digits can identify a revised version. If the number is unavailable, use the VIN, model year, specification and close-up photos of plugs and mounting points.
If two versions still appear possible, send the vehicle details, number and photos for a focused check. That is far more reliable than choosing by model name alone.
