Rear doors or tailgate: which suits your van?
Twin rear doors and an upward-opening tailgate create very different rear structures. They differ in hinges, locks, gas struts, glazing, lights and wiring as well as everyday use. Replacing the original with the same factory configuration is normally the practical route.
Start with the existing body structure
Confirm whether the van left the factory with twin doors or a tailgate, then compare generation, body length, roof height and facelift. Converting between types may require body, electrical and regulatory assessment and is not a routine parts swap.
Compare the complete equipment
Record opening angle, hinge position, solid or glazed design, wiper, heating, lock, handle and wiring. A tailgate also depends on the correct gas struts, top hinges and the weight of its glass and trim.
Establish what is included
A used assembly may be bare or supplied with glass, lock, trim and wiring. Inspect the photos and description because components from the old configuration may not transfer to the replacement.
